The artistic works of asylum seekers and refugees from across Australia are the focus of a new exhibition at the Walker Street Gallery.
Curator David O’Halloran said the Home and Art exhibition celebrates and recognises the important contribution of asylum seekers and refugees, including those that had settled in Springvale and throughout Dandenong City, Victoria.
Gallery exhibition Catalogues list works of sculptures, videos and paintings by 14 artists across the country.
According to O’Halloran, the inaugural event had created a great deal of excitement and had also given participating artists who were now living in Australia a chance to express themselves.
He said it was hoped people representing all corners of the community would take the opportunity to view the exhibition, which will be on show at the gallery until July 30. This included refugees and asylum seekers who were not necessarily regular visitors to the art gallery.
Mayor of Greater Dandenong Heang Tak said the exhibition was an example of Council’s commitment to support projects that welcomed these new arrivals into the community.
He said projects such as Home and Art provide opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees to share their personal journeys while pursuing their artistic talents immersed in the thriving arts landscape in Australia.
Entries in the Home and Art exhibition vied for a top prize of $3,000. A total of $500 was also awarded to a local artist.
