Springvale, Victoria residents are being urged to support Greater Dandenong charities in the lead up to Christmas.
Reduced services and spiralling demand have heightened the importance of gaining much needed resources to service the desperate need for food and gifts to help people in hardship over the festive season.
Salvation Army Dandenong spokesman Captain Stuart McGifford said demand during the Christmas and New Year period ramped up and, by the time the organisation’s office opened in January, many families were in need of assistance having overspent during December. He said part of the Salvation Army’s aim was to ensure families and children do not feel miserable.
The Salvation Army is also seeking Christmas wrappers to help out at the Dandenong Plaza, where the public are invited to donate gifts for children of all ages.
He said there was a particular need for presents for older kids and teenagers and Christmas food, such as nonperishable Christmas cake.
Flyers have been circulated for donations and Captain McGifford said packages of donations would also be gratefully received.
Charities are vital during difficult times such as Christmas because is it’s a time when people can feel really down, according to Pastor Don Cameron of Cornerstone Contact Centre.
Events such as the Connections Uniting Care 15th annual gift and food appeal in Noble Park are highly important at this time of year, according to the Pastor.
