The creativity of aged care residents in Springvale and throughout Dandenong City was put to the test during the COVID-19 lockdown when each were gifted art packs, and the results of their efforts are now on show.
Undertaken in conjunction with the city's nationally recognised 9 by 5 Exhibition, which has been running 15 years, the packs provided blank boards of about nine by five inches, on which residents could paint their own masterpieces and follow art workshop videos to help them finetune their skills.
Mayor of Greater Dandenong Angela Long said the gifted nine by five inch boards held great significance for the exhibition, which itself commemorated its origins back to 1889 in Melbourne, when some of Australia's top artists, including Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and Tom Roberts, uniformly produced artworks created on nine by five inch lids on cigar Boxes.
The exhibition boasts more than 270 artworks and, according to the mayor, celebrates the art community's diversity, including the residents of aged care whose works are now on display in the exhibition at the gallery. Popular exhibitions such as this have often been the focus of major brochure printing campaigns promoting local events.
The 9 by 5 Exhibition can be viewed at the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre until January 23, 2021. Visitors will also have an opportunity to purchase artworks featured in the exhibition.
