Showcasing the art work of 46 of New South Wales’ most talented young artists, the ARTEXPRESS exhibition is currently running at the Hazelhurt Regional Gallery and Arts Centre.
The exhibition is a display of Higher School Certificate artworks and covers a wide and diverse range of themes, including local and international environmental degradation, the effect colonisation has had on indigenous culture and identity, women in war and questioning the gender binary system.
The artworks reveal the sophisticated imaginations and talent of the artists, in pieces made up of drawings, sculpture, digital printing, photomedia, ceramics and paintings.
When speaking about her work ‘Stolen’, Shaylee Crummins of Engadine High School says she explores the “loss of Aboriginal identity due to colonisation”. Joshua Lee of Cronulla High School describes drawing on both his own experiences as well as those of the people around him, to explore the societal views of developing countries in his work ‘Bound By Perception’.
Located at 782 Kingsway, Gymea, the Hazelhurst Memorial Gallery and Arts Centre offers art education to the local communities, including Gymea, Caringbah and Sutherland. Open daily from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (except public holidays) and free to attend, Hazelhurt is easily accessible, with a train stop five minutes’ walk away, or a bus stop out the front.
