TV crew showcases native plants in blossoming local reserve

Sutherland Shire residents from Caringbah and neighbouring suburbs will be among thousands to tune in to a special spring preview television programme, filmed in the region.

The local footage is part of an ABC Gardening Australia TV segment presented by Angus Stewart.

According to an ABC spokesman, the filming was based at Kareela’s Joseph Banks Native Plants Reserve and illustrated the process of planting natives in time for the spring season.

He said the other segments on current flowering species, such as the leafless Rock Wattle or Acacia aphylla, which have often been featured on Calendars and floral Postcards, were also filmed.

Ralph Cartwright, of the Australian Plants Society (APS) Sutherland group, said the location so impressed producers of the segments that they plan to return for further projects.

He said the reserve is ablaze with colour, including masses of wattle with six different types currently in full bloom and grevilleas well on the way.

Funding has recently been allocated to the APS for the provision of interpretative Signs to supplement the already existing 500 plant labels located at several places in the reserve.

The special preview to spring episode is expected to air on ABC TV on September 23.

The 2.2 hectare Joseph Banks Native Plants Reserve opened in 1969. It was inspired by botanist Sir Joseph Banks and continues to operate in close association with the APS, which hosts fundraising activities to assist with the provision of plant labels, interpretive Signs and plants.
