The company announced this month that it would cease production by 2017 after 50 years of manufacturing in the country, remaining solely as a sales and distribution company.
The decision affects more than 4,000 staff members around the country, including workers at the Altona plant in Melbourne and at the Caringbah office, which houses the sales and marketing departments and acts as the national parts distribution centre.
The company’s bosses cited high manufacturing costs in Australia as some of the reasons for the decision. Toyota Australia head Max Yasuda said:
"We did everything that we could to transform our business, but the reality is that there are too many factors beyond our control that make it unviable to build cars in Australia."
However, employees at the Caringbah operation have been told that the workforce there will not be affected at this stage.
