The event is held in celebration and recognition of International Day of People with Disability, which is held on December 3.
According to Sutherland Shire Mayor, Carmelo Pesce, the competition gives aspiring filmmakers a chance to show their talents, and she added:
"This event provides a fantastic creative platform for those who live with a disability and allows Council to deliver greater opportunities for inclusion."
All ages can enter the competition for free. Films entered will be required to focus on “ability and inclusion”. It is also a requirement that a minimum of one crew or cast member have a disability and that Sutherland Shire locals or locations are featured.
The Sutherland Shire offers a great variety of popular attractions that provide top filming potential, ranging from Cronulla Beach and Cape Solander to Kareena Park and Miranda Fair. Popular local attractions such as these have often been highlighted on brochure printing campaigns aimed at tourists.
Budding filmmakers will need to complete their entries to meet the deadline of 5pm on October 30. Entries of competition finalists will then be available for viewing via the Facebook page of Sutherland Shire Council on November 27 at 6.30pm. The 2020 winners will also be announced during the screening, described by the Mayor as the ShireABILITY sequel.
