Caringbah and Sutherland Shire residents now have access to the area’s newly installed reverse vending machines.
In a first for the region, the machines are now operational at Southern Cross Group Stadium and the Sharks Leagues Club.
Launched recently by state MPs Eleni Petinos and Mark Speakman, the machines are part of the new technology used in the `Return and Earn’ scheme.
Two of the four reverse vending machines (RVMs) accommodate glass containers, while the others take cartons, cans and plastic.
Additional locations for RVM sites in Sutherland and Menai Marketplace are expected to be announced soon.
The new scheme, according to Speakman (who gained its approval in cabinet), allows the introduction of a 10¢ refund for the return of conventional containers, as is already happening in the Northern Territory and South Australia.
He said refunds given via the RVMs for eligible containers returned are provided in three ways: the money can be donated to a charity listed on the screen, paid directly to an individual’s bank account using PayPal, or via a voucher redeemable from a participating retailer.
Woolworths has been listed as the retailer on the Shark’s RVMs while charities include Planet Ark, Surf Life Saving NSW, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Cancer Council, all of which are widely publicised through numerous printing services.
Speakman said that during a six-week period, the scheme had recorded the return of more than 35 million containers.
