The ever growing Relay for Life will be hosted at a different location within the Sutherland Shire Council in 2017.
The event’s original home since it began 15 years ago was the Sylvania Waters Athletics Track, near Caringbah, which is to undergo $1 million resurfacing works. That, together with the Relay for Life organisers’ plans to expand the event has prompted the need for another venue.
A spokesman for Sutherland Shire Council explained that work on the track surface could not be delayed any longer and costly repairs were only a temporary solution and needed to be addressed.
Plans to upgrade the track, he said, have been on the table for two years and when complete, will provide many long awaited benefits for residents and the community in general.
As part of the upgrade, the track will be improved to an IAAF rating to enable it to host state and regional athletics competitions in the future.
He said several alternative locations for the Relay for Life event were currently being considered and each provided a more substantial event footprint, better visibility and improved parking capacity as well as plenty of space to display Posters and Signs.
Australia’s first Relay for Life was in 1999 and the fundraising event for cancer has since gained such a following that relays are held nationwide. More than 134,000 people take part in the event, which raises an estimated $24m each year.
