Registrations for Sutherland Shire’s 2016 Bubble Soccer Competition have closed, with the event set to kick off in May.
The sport, which has attracted participants from throughout the shire including Caringbah, has proved extremely popular with residents of all ages, according to Mayor Carmelo Pesce.
He said the game is entertaining to watch and play, with staying upright being one of the most challenging skills to master.
The Mayor quipped that the most common injury was probably caused to facial muscles from laughing too much.
Newsletter printing has helped create interest in bubble soccer, which is played over four quarters of five minutes each. During this time, team members roll, bump and bounce off each other in an attempt to score a goal.
The games, held at the Menai Indoor Sports Centre from May 2, will encompass women’s, men’s and junior competitions.
The Mayor said it was one of many activities on offer at the centre which, in addition to leisure centres at Caringbah, Engadine and Sutherland, provide quality facilities for the benefit of the entire community.
He added that providing quality recreation and sports facilities was one way for council to encourage healthy and active lifestyles.
The Menai Indoor Sports Centre in Allison Crescent features a wide range of facilities, which includes a kiosk, players’ amenities, a large activities room for exhibitions and events, and four multipurpose courts dedicated to sports.
