Non-profit organisation work hard to help wildlife

The latest project to be completed by a branch of the Men’s Shed in Penshurst has resulted in the creation of 10 bespoke animal Boxes which will be used by ecological restoration group Bushcare.

The Boxes produced by the St George’s Men’s Shed, which is made up of workers from across Sydney, Hurtsville and Caringbah, will be used primarily to relocate noisy possums from suburban homes back to their natural environments.

Hurstville’s mayor, Jack Jacovou, said of the issue:

“Local possum populations are sadly on the decline throughout NSW, due to loss of habitat and tree hollows, so these Boxes will help give possums a home.”

It is hoped that the relationship between Bushcare and the St George Men’s shed will make a significant difference, with protected possum colonies expected to once again flourish in the region. The Boxes are accommodating to both brushtail and ringtail possums, and are freely available for locals to borrow.

The nocturnal creatures are well known for their noisy running and scratching in homeowners’ ceilings during the night. They can also do a lot of damage to gardens and have, in the past, been known to confront family pets.

The Men’s Shed initiative will benefit both humans and possums, with the only expense being the occasional luring apple. Bushcare has made the area’s residents aware of the project with the help of local printing companies. Posters dotted around the area can be found with more information about how to get hold of the Boxes.
