The two girls, who were selected from a field of 9,097 students are Menai High School’s Louise Wise, and Maddison Laura Grounds of Woolooware High School, near Caringbah.
Their works are among 40 featured in the Art Gallery’s exhibition, which was mounted to illustrate the outstanding talent of students who sat for the 2017 Higher School Certificate Visual Arts examination.
The submissions explore political and social matters, along with mixed heritage and Australian cultural identity, gentrification, the refugee crisis, social media, waste management and environmental concerns.
Louise said her work, `Curioser and Curiouser’, was influenced by Shaun Tan, an Australian graphic artist.
Inspiration also came from the Lewis Carroll classic ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, together with a fondness for picture Books and cartoons. She explained:
“I wanted my body of work to illustrate a simple story where a catalyst motivates the protagonist through a journey.”
Louise said she worked with digital medium and a graphics tablet to explore the natural curiosity of a human.
Titled `Ties’, Maddison’s drawing took inspiration from Luisi Mera and Daniel Garcia, both artists. She said:
“My body of work explores the diversity of family members from both my mother’s and father’s side.”
Maddison said different angles of shadow and light were explored to produce her artwork.
