Entertainment centre set for upgrade

A major entertainment venue near Caringbah is set to be redeveloped for the first time in 40 years.

A recent vote of unanimous support by councillors representing Sutherland Shire will now see members of a working party and the councillors themselves moving ahead with a proposal for the Sutherland Entertainment Centre to be redeveloped at a cost of $41.2 million.

Mayor Steve Simpson explained that the move to advance the project had been long coming, and it represented a significant event in the history of the council. He added:

“The Sutherland Entertainment Centre has been a much loved and well used performance and events space for over forty years, but we all acknowledge it is in need of a refresh to ensure it can continue to be the region’s premier entertainment destination for many years to come.”

The mayor also said the centre's upgrade will provide the community with jobs and economic stimulus.

Major entertainment venues such as this can also assist other businesses, such as Print shops, which produce many of the Flyers and Posters used to promote events at such venues.

The redevelopment project will involve many major improvements, such as the refurbishment of the theatre to accommodate 650 patrons, a full over-stage fly-tower, new flexible rehearsal and teaching spaces, a new forecourt at the entry with a flexible event space outdoors, an expanded foyer, an improved back-of-house and upgrades to the adjacent Peace Park.

Work is expected to begin early in 2021 for completion in 2022.
