As recently as last month, it appeared the proposal for the 15,800 square-metre warehouse would be rejected under the B7 business park zoning regulations. However, Kent Johns, Sutherland Shire mayor, overruled a report by council officers and has deemed the shop as being within guidelines.
The Caringbah site is part of an Australia-wide expansion by the US retail firm, with at least another five stores planned to open during the next 18 months. It’s expected that the Caringbah store will create around 330 jobs for locals.
According to Tony Doherty, head of Jones Lang LaSalle property and asset management, the expansion will create “healthy” competition without providing a threat to nearby stores. He said:
“You’ve got to pay upfront, you’ve got your annual fee and you don’t have that at Coles and Woolworths.”
In Victoria, a vote will take place later in the year regarding a single-storey Costco outlet planned for Epping plaza in Whittlesea. In Queensland, work has begun on a $35 million development located at Stockland North Lakes. Costco has also been investigating locations in Logan, the western suburbs and the Gold Coast. A South Australian development is also going ahead, with another store being developed in Kilburn.
No doubt Costco will be working with local Print companies for POS printing and Banners to build awareness in the area and prepare for the openings.
