Caringbah student takes Rubik's title at annual maths event

A local student is celebrating taking the title for completing a Rubik's cube in the shortest time, at the annual state wide Number Crunchers competition this month.

Ryan Wong, who attends Caringbah High School, managed to solve the challenging cube in well under half a minute. Showing his clear logical skills at the event celebrating young mathematicians in the state, Wong managed to have all the coloured panels in order in just 24 seconds.

The event, which is organised by North South Wales Public Schools, sees a number of skills tested.

Run since 2008, when four primary schools first came together to showcase their mathematical brains, the event now sees more than 2,000 students from 55 of the state's schools taking part. This year's event took place at the Powerhouse Museum.

Other competitions saw students tested with a series of challenging maths questions, including testing their recall of pi.

Impressing most with his memory of the mathematical constant was student Anthony Watt-Smith. Schooled at Connells Point Public school, he took the Golden Pi challenge championship by reciting the number to 588 decimal places.

A student from the same school took the top place in the overall cumulative title, with Reece Fessopoulos celebrating.

The competition, the brainchild of late maths headteacher in the state, Andrew Taylor, come become incredibly popular from when it started with only a few schools.

Now an event that sees banner printing for the show, it was even compered by local celebrity radio DJ Adam Spencer. Spencer is well known among many listeners for his great passion for all things mathematic.
