An area of Caringbah repeatedly targeted by unauthorised graffiti artists is set to be transformed into a pretty open space, thanks to a grant from the New South Wales State Government.
The funding was announced earlier this month by Attorney-General Gabrielle Upton, and will be overseen by the Sutherland Shire Council.
The council has been awarded $50,000 to improve the area around Park Lane in Caringbah in a bid to deter the graffiti artists who favour the spot.
Many commercial premises that are accessed from the laneway next to the Coles supermarket and a council car park have been regularly targeted by vandals who tag the walls of each building.
Consultations have now started with local firms and property owners and to help develop a draft design for the redevelopment.
Once the draft is completed, the council could use printing services to create colour images of the plan to be displayed to business owners and residents for further consultation.
Current plans include strategic planting to reduce access to the walls of businesses backing onto the laneway and public artworks to make the area more attractive.
Cronulla MP Mark Speakman welcomed the grant, telling the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader newspaper that cleaning up graffiti across the state costs more than $100m each year.
