The E. G. Waterhouse Camellia Gardens was awarded an International Camellia Garden of Excellence award at an event held by the International Camellia Society in Spain. It is one of just 40 gardens with such an award around the world. In New South Wales, it is the only garden with the designation.
The grounds have more than 400 species and cultivars of camellias, acquired since the area was first planted in 1969, as well as several other rare and native plants. It is also home to some of the rarest camellia species in Australia, including several overseas varieties that can no longer be brought into the country.
Sutherland Shire Mayor Councillor Steve Simpson said the gardens had been well looked after throughout the years. He said:
"I would like to recognise the team of gardeners who work tirelessly at the Camellia Gardens and have made it the magical place it is today. One man who should be noted is former head gardener Graeme Pace who gave 30 years of his life to working in the gardens."
