The Green Streets programme has successfully recorded its 10,000th tree planting in the five years since it began in 2014. Mayor Carmelo Pesce executed the memorable planting, which involved a Melaleuca linariifolia or Snow-in-Summer and said:
“Planting 10,000 trees since 2014 is a great achievement by our Green Streets team, who have planted trees in nature strips and on public land right across the Sutherland Shire.”
He said residents are extremely proud of the area’s natural beauty, images of which have often been showcased as part of promotional brochure printing campaigns. The plantings have been undertaken under strict guidelines to ensure trees do not interfere with power lines, don’t grow too tall and require only low maintenance care, according to the Mayor.
The Snow-in-Summer species of tree is among popular plantings, as it is indigenous to the local area and ideal for gardens and streets.
Green Streets has proved successful and won a raft of awards, including the Local Government Award of Excellence in the Environment Award and the Keep NSW Beautiful Award for Environment and Biodiversity.
A further 3,000 trees are set to be planted in Cronulla, Engadine, Jannali and Taren Point following grants from the state government.
