Rail plan to link Providence and Worcester

Boston Surface Railroad Co. (BSRC) has developed a plan for a passenger railroad between Worcester in Massachusetts and Providence in Rhode Island.

The vision is that commuters could travel between the two places in around an hour. Flyer printing in Warwick could be use to help promote the use of the route by the public. Robert Puentes, one of the senior fellows at the Brooking Institute, has said:

"We're going through changes in this country with how people travel. Everybody's looking for more choices. This is the right conversation to be having, particularly in a place like Rhode Island.”

Mr. Puentes has gained considerable expertise in the area of infrastructure. In the past, he has worked for the Intelligent Transportation Society of America.

With regard to the Providence rail route, a feasibility study has already been finished. Vincent Bono, the chief executive of BSRC, has claimed that putting the plans into practice would not be reliant on subsidies.

It has been reported that the cost of the project to BSRC would be limited because the existing railroad tracks on the route would make things easy. At the moment, well-maintained tracks have been helping in the transportation of freight. These tracks have been under the ownership of Providence and Worcester Railroad Co. (PWRC) and it has been suggested by BSRC that this enterprise would continue to operate things under the new arrangement.
