A proposed housing development in Fairview is nearing final approval.
The former Coffinberry school property will become the site of the Thomas Lane subdivision once the plan is approved by the city council. The property, which is on the east side of Fairview Park, is currently vacant. The development is a project of Garland New Homes.
The issue has been difficult, since many residents of Coffinberry wanted a large area of the project to be dedicated as greenspace, which the developer did not include in the plans. Fairview Park's master plan also recommended that greenspace be included at this particular site.
Kellie DuBay Gillis has been spearheading the opposition to the developer's plan to limit greenspace, and said residents still hope to find a way to compromise on the issue. She added that since the matter is now before the city council, she hopes public input will be accepted and considered, since the council will consider the zoning proposal three different times.
DuBay Gillis pointed out that once houses are built with only limited greenspace, there will be no way to recover the opportunity to have a much larger green area. DuBay Gillis still hopes to see something “really amazing . . . a piece of greenspace for the future.”
