What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Residents near Colerain see a change in recycling options

The recycling landscape is changing in the area around Colerain.

Over the summer, two drop-off locations for recycling shut down, reducing the number of drop-off locations in the county to 28.

Additionally, Republic Services, which offered recycling pick-up to customers in the area, brought this service to an end on Tuesday, September 18.

Some residents are not happy about the news. Meg Krsacok, a Republic customer, said to the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“I am so disappointed that Republic has stopped collecting recycling. We have always recycled, and I cannot bring myself to throw recyclables in the trash so we are looking at alternatives.”

Towns that are losing specific services can use flyer printing to let residents know about the change and to provide a list of alternative solutions.

Republic Services explained its reasoning for discontinuing recycling pick-up by stating that the areas affected by the change had low participation levels to begin with.

Those in favor of curbside recycling programs argue that people usually recycle more when they can collect items and place them out on the curb in front of their homes. Colerain, Ross, and Springfield townships saw an increase in recycling when they partnered with Hamilton County Recycling to launch a curbside program.

Residents who still have curbside recycling pickup are reminded to be careful about what they place in their bins. Only recyclable items such as glass bottles, steel, and aluminum cans, office paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles and jugs belong in the bins.
