What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Dedication ceremony scheduled for historic tollbooth in Colerain

Nearly a year ago, The Coleraine Historical Society rescued an old Toll House and Post Office and transported them to Colerain Heritage Park.

During the next nine months, the historical society worked to restore the tollbooth and post office, using both the support of donations and volunteer labor. The historical society plans on dedicated the renewed structure during ceremonies later this month.

Historical groups and organizations can use printing services to advertise their events and to encourage people with an interest in their towns to participate. The Colerain Tollbooth began its life in 1829, after the state congress in Ohio passed a law that charged people for use of road. Originally, the toll house sat at Banning Road and Blue Rock Road.

By the end of the 19th Century, no tolls were charged, so people began using the tollbooth as a post office and general store. The building turned into a post office in 1880 and was called Creedville, after Jerome Creed, who was a well-known lawyer in the area. The first postmaster was Fridolon Gutzwiller.

The building was no longer used as a post office starting in 1905 and moved to Cheviot and Galbraith Roads, where it remained for nearly 100 years.

The dedication is scheduled for 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 29 at Heritage Park. Charles Gutwiller, a descendant of Fridolon, will cut the ribbon during the dedication ceremony.
