Community gardens spread across Colerain

A new community garden is slated to open this season.

Named Northgate Community Garden, the new facility will be offering an additional 80 plots to aspiring and experienced gardeners in the area. The plots range in size from 10 feet by 20 feet, to 20 feet by 20 feet. The smaller of the two options has enough space for a person to grow ten pepper plants, ten tomato plants, two rows of lettuce, two rows of other greens, ten cucumber plants, four summer squash plants, and several herb plants.

Gardeners with more time on their hands, specifically those who can spend about eight hours a week working on the garden, can choose the larger plot, which has room for fifteen tomato plants, three rows of lettuce, three rows of greens, fifteen cucumber plants, eight squash plants, eight broccoli plants, a row of beans, a row of carrots, ten pepper plants, and some herbs.

The community garden could use flyers and other printed items to encourage people to sign up for either size of garden plot. Applications are currently being accepted and volunteers are putting the finishing touches on the garden, including building a tall fence to keep out deer and other animal pests. The cost of the garden plots is $25 for the smaller size and $40 for the larger one.
