Colerain schools host events before closures
As the end of the school year approaches, it is a time for major change at several schools in Colerain.
The Northwest Local School District will be closing five buildings at the end of the academic year. In order to give current and past students and other members of the community a chance to say goodbye, the district held several special events over the course of the past month.
School districts who have major plans for change in the works can use printing services to let families know what is going on. Each of the schools that will be closing are elementary schools: Pleasant Run Elementary, Struble Elementary, Taylor Elementary, Weigel Elementary, and Welch Elementary.
In their place, the district plans on building three new school buildings. Pleasant Run and Welch schools will merge into a single kindergarten through grade five school. Weigel and Strugle schools will also merge into a single K-5 school. Taylor will be rebuilt on its current site.
The event took place near the end of April and was designed to give members of the community, as well as teachers and students, a chance to say goodbye to the buildings.
The funds for the new construction come from a $2.82m bond levy and a $1m operating levy, which voters in the district passed in 2015. The hope is that the three new buildings will save the school district enough money to be able to replace the existing Colerain elementary and middle school at a later date, without the need for more taxes.
