Colerain gears up for Relay for Life

The organizers of Colerain Township's Relay for Life hope to have at least 43 teams participating in this year’s event, raising at least $58,000 for cancer research.

With the event just over a week away, the organizers have 41 teams and are still looking for participants. Teams can have from one to 15 members. To spread the word and find more participants, the organizers could use professional flyer printing and hang the flyers up in local businesses.

The relay lasts through the afternoon, evening, and night, and finishes at 8:00 am the next day. During the event, there will be several ceremonies to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember lost loved ones. After an opening ceremony, the relay kicks off with a survivors’ lap, during which people who have battled cancer and won can walk or run around the track. After the sun sets, a Luminaria ceremony will honor and remember people who were lost to cancer. Entertainment and other activities will take place throughout the relay, as well.

Proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society and are put towards research across the US. In Ohio, a number of hospitals are receiving funds, such as Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, which has received more than $1.4m.

The Relay for Life will be held at Colerain Park at 4725 Springdale Road, starting at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 17.
