Colerain finds way to reduce traffic speed

Communities across the country often face a similar concern – how to get motorists to slow down. Colerain township is taking a somewhat novel approach to the issue.

The township has installed chicanes along Loralinda Drive in the Northbrook section. A chicane is a bump-out from the curb, usually spaced in groups of two or three. The bump-outs are placed on alternating sides of a roadway and staggered several feet apart. Their presence creates a one-lane section, causing drivers to slow down and make their way along the street one car at a time.

How far apart the chicanes are and how far they extend into the street influences the speed at which and the ease with which a driver can make their way through an area.

Communities that are thinking of testing out new ways of reducing traffic speed or better controlling traffic can use poster printing to let motorists know of the change and what to expect.

The chicanes went into action on September 24. So far, the chicanes in Colerain are installed on a temporary basis. If they prove to be effective, the township would consider making them a permanent feature on Loralinda Drive and possibly on other roadways.

The township chose chicanes over speedbumps as the bumps can cause damage to vehicles, interfere with emergency response vehicles, and get in the way of snowplows.
