What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Colerain evaluates results of speed reduction project

Complaints from residents and concerns about the safety of children playing outdoors have caused the township to launch a 30-day trial of chicanes, meant to slow down drivers and reduce incidences of speeding. The results of the trial are currently being analyzed.

For years, drivers in Colerain have used Loralinda Lane as a sort of shortcut when traffic gets backed up on nearby Springdale Road. The trouble has been that drivers tend to zip down the road, ignoring the 25mph speed limit as they zoom past residential properties and a daycare.

The chicanes were taken down near the beginning of November. Currently, township officials are examining the data that was collected electronically while the speed deterrents were installed. From the data, they hope to answer the question "did the chicanes cause drivers to slow down?"

The officials can compare the data collected during the test to early speed data. So far, the data has shown that drivers did slow down during the first week the chicanes were up. There was also an increase in traffic during that time.

Although the chicanes might be effective at slowing people down, not everyone is a fan of them. Some residents complained that they had to slow down too much to maneuver around them.

Townships that plan on instituting new programs or running trials can use letterheads to send a message to everyone in the area, letting them know about the changes and the reasoning behind it.
