Colerain art class teaches bird drawing tips

Those in Colerain interested in expanding their artistic abilities can take an online workshop offered by the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library.

Virtual Explore 101: Drawing Birds in Charley Harper's Style is an art course where participants can learn how to draw 28 birds. The lesson will consist of a mix of art appreciation, painting, and drawing. People who plan on taking the class must have at least a pencil, eraser, and paper. The instructor will cover Harper's simple and complex images. Students are expected to have a completed sketchbook by the end of the series, though they are allowed to deviate from Harper's style.

Charley Harper was a modernist wildlife artist who was born in 1922. His appreciation for animals came from his upbringing on a farm in West Virginia. He also studied at colleges like the Cincinnati Art Academy and West Virginia Wesleyan College. Harper used humor to raise awareness of environmental concerns and stylized his pieces with geometric reduction. Artists similar to this can network with potential buyers by giving them business cards.

The bird drawing class will take place from December 2 to February 24, and each session will last from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The activity is a free program for adults, though all participants must register for a spot in the course in advance. The art lesson will be conducted over a Zoom call.
