Old Westbury Gardens offers programming year round, and it has scheduled an activity that may be of special interest to anyone who wants to brush up on their tree ID skills.
The fall can be a good time of the year to participate in a hike, and one that will be held at the Gardens will teach identification techniques that may be helpful when determining the species or even cultivar of both native and ornamental plants. Naturalist Carey Russel will guide the walk, and all skill levels are encouraged to participate.
During the session, the attendees will learn how to use characteristics such as tree shape and outline, growth habitat, bud shape, leaf scar shape, and bark to determine a species, and they can ask questions as well. The outing will last for approximately two hours, and pre-registration is mandatory. The fee is $20 for garden members and $25 for non-members.
The fall can be a good time of year to go for a horticultural hike. Field guides and other materials for an outing can be prepared by a local company that supplies binding and other printing services.
Old Westbury Gardens will be hosting this outdoor activity on Saturday, October 8. It will head out at 11:00 am, and registration details can be found on the host’s website.
