What's Happening in Westbury, NY…

Westbury to decide how to spend $10m grant

Two years ago, Westbury received a $10 million grant from the state to put towards revitalization of the downtown area. Flash forward to the present, and town officials are working on plans to put the money to good use.

Seven projects have been chosen from dozens of ideas submitted by community members.

One of the projects is to provide a permanent home to the Westbury Arts Council. The village of Westbury closed on a two-floor, 3,500-square foot property two months ago. The property would provide the headquarters for the arts council. The next step is to design the building, with the goal to open next summer.

The president of the arts council, Julie Lyon, told Newsday that the goal is to bring the residents of Westbury together and to attract people from other Long Island towns to the village.

Other projects include building a pedestrian plaza that would connect the Long Island Rail Road station to the downtown area, and rezoning areas of downtown to allow for transit-focused development.

Villages and towns that are using grant money for public projects can use printing services to spread the word to residents, and to get people on board with the projects.

The grant money comes from the Downtown Revitalization Initiative set up by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Westbury was one of 10 areas in the state chosen for the first year of grants.
