Westbury theater group celebrates milestone year with comedy

When the curtain goes up on the Herricks Community Center Stage, in New Hyde Park, near Westbury, this Friday, more than the usual theater magic will happen.

The Herricks Community Players are celebrating their 40th anniversary. The musical that gets to ring in 40 years it the classic comedy about Ancient Rome, ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’. The theater may use poster printing to highlight and celebrate its milestone year.

The musical is directed by John Hayes, a veteran director with the Herricks Community Players. It will be his 69th show with the organization. Hayes got his start with the community players when he was 37 years old, new in town, and wanting to help out. The first show he directed with the group was the musical ‘Oklahoma’, which he got on stage in just five weeks.

Now aged 78, he told the Westbury Times:

“This is what I am most happy doing. The people have been magnificent. The love, camaraderie and friends—that’s why I do the shows every year.”

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum opens on May 13 at 8:00 pm. Shows continue until May 22. Performances on Fridays and Saturdays are at 8:00 pm and Sunday matinees are at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $20 to $25 and are available at the theater's website or by phone.
