Westbury students turn trash into treasure

Students in Westbury and other villages in the Town of North Hempstead have the chance to once again show off their creativity and ingenuity during the Recycled Artwork Contest.

Designed as a way to get more people, communities, and schools in the area recycling, the contest encourages students to use reclaimed materials to create works of art. Artworks can be made of paper, rubber, metal, fabric, or plastic, as long as the material has been reclaimed and is being recycled or reused for the project.

Pretty much any style of art is welcome, but there are a few rules. The piece should be less than 60 inches tall and no wider than 30 inches. Although glass is a recyclable and reusable material, it should not be used in the projects for safety reasons.

The organizers of the contest can use local printing services to spread the word area schools. Any student from kindergarten through 12th grade in any of the town's school districts or who lives in the town of North Hempstead is eligible to participate.

Students are invited to bring their entries to the Gold Coast Arts Center in Great Neck by November 30. The works of art will be judged by members of the North Hempstead Arts Advisory Committee.

Winners will be announced on December 7 at 6:00 pm during a ceremony at the Arts Center. Each entry to the contest will be on display at the center until January 1.
