Westbury students get to rock with genre-fusing musician

On February 6, students in the orchestras at Westbury Middle School and Westbury High School had a chance get on stage with Mark Wood, a founder of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Wood’s band fuses rock and roll with classical music styles, and he has also played a role in the development of electric string instruments, such as electric violins and cellos.

The artist is now looking to spread a love for music to the next generation through Electrify Your Strings, a music and education program he created. When offering new initiatives, organizers like Wood will often use brochure printers to let other schools in Long Island, and across the country, learn about the efforts.

As part of the program, Wood performs with the students onstage, but the concert on February 6 was not all about him. Instead, students from the middle and high schools had plenty of chances to shine. One stand out was Natalia Cox, a 13-year-old who sang the song ‘Runaway’.

The concert mistress for Westbury High's orchestra, Tiffany Shaw, gave a performance during the show. She presented ‘Come Fly with Me’, which was written by Wood, improvising a melody as she played.

Speaking to the Westbury Times about her experience with Electrify Your Strings, Shaw commented:
“It’s nice to try something new. It’s a very unique, playful experience.”
