Westbury students encouraged to Step Up!

A recent event held at Westbury High School found around 50 students partnered with leaders from within the community.

The goal of the partnership was to help students learn to set goals and work towards achieving academic success. Over the course of two hours, students got to explore the possibility of a college education in depth and to learn the value of continuing their education when their high school years come to an end.

Known as the Step Up! Program, it was created in 2015 by Siela A. Bynoe, an alumnus of Westbury High School and a legislator in Nassau County. This year was the first year Bynoe brought the program to her alma-mater. Step Up! also took place at Malverne High School and Hempstead High School.

Schools can use printing services to help students learn more about their post-graduation and college options, and to allow them to discover some of the resources available to help them reach their goals.

The target audience for the Step Up! program is sophomore and juniors in high school. During the program, students are given advice which steps will put them on the path towards certain careers after they graduate.

Bynoe worked with Bridge to Promise to help bring the program to Long Island high schools. Speaking to the Westbury Times, she stated:

“This new partnership with Bridge to Promise continues the work started in 2015, but their efforts to re-engineer the program provided the participants with an inspirational experience.”
