For many, the beginning of a new academic year is the ideal time to show pride in a school and to support the school's sports team. During a recent homecoming weekend, people in Westbury had plenty of opportunities to show off their school spirit.
Held during the first week of October, Homecoming featured a community parade, a pancake breakfast and a football game.
The 2018 Homecoming Parade was the biggest one to take place in recent years. Groups from the community, as well as students from schools in the Westbury district, participated in the parade.
The theme of this year's parade was ‘Ancient Civilizations’. Students, administrators, and teachers who marched in the parade decorated floats and wore costumes that matched the theme.
Before the parade began, participants and other residents had a chance to fuel up at the annual pancake breakfast. A fundraiser sponsored by the parent-teacher-student association (PTSA), money raised by the breakfast goes towards scholarships for high school seniors.
The endpoint for the homecoming parade was the high school. Once the parade reached the school grounds, it was time to name the homecoming court. Jeffrey Jordan was named homecoming king and Daniela Valeriano-Cortez took home the crown as queen.
The day's festivities were capped off with a football game, during which the home team, Westbury High, beat visiting Plainview-Old Bethpage 19 to 14.
PTSAs that are trying to raise money or put together fundraisers can use printing service to spread the word to students and others connected to a school.
