Westbury residents asked to recycle unwanted Christmas decorations

Now that the winter holidays are officially over, the town of North Hempstead is running several special programs to help residents of Westbury and the rest of the township dispose of their trees and other decorations in a responsible fashion.

During the first two weeks of January, the town will collect live Christmas trees at curbside during normal waste collection. Trees collected curbside will be recycled and turned into mulch, instead of being sent to the landfill. The town can use poster printing to let residents know of the pickup schedule and the rules for leaving trees curbside. Any trees left for recycling should be stripped of lights, ornaments, and other decorations.

If residents have worn out or broken holiday lights or other electronics, they are encouraged to dispose of them properly. New York State law prohibits residents from throwing out electronic waste with their regular garbage. Any e-waste needs to be sent to a drop-off site for recycling, where is it collected by an EPA-certified recycler.

The residential drop-off site for the town of North Hempstead is located in Roslyn. It will be accepting holiday lights and electronic decorations until the end of January on Sundays from 7:30 am until 3:30 pm. Residents are also welcome to bring lights and other electronic waste to the Solid Waste Management Authority in Port Washington on weekdays from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm.
