Rebecca Amitai, a resident of Old Westbury, is planning to climb an African mountain to raise money for research.
Amitai is setting out to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in February of 2017. Before she sets out on her climb, she aims to raise $10,000 to support research for multiple myeloma.
Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that Forms in the plasma cells and weakens the bones. One of Amitai's best friends has the cancer. Originally, the two women had planned to climb the Kenyan mountain together as part of the Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma program.
Groups that hope to raise money for a good cause can use brochure printers to get the word out about the cause they are supporting and how the money raised will benefit the project. In the case of the Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma project, all proceeds raised are going to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
The foundation has so far played a big role in funding much of the research into multiple myeloma and in speeding up the process of getting treatments and medications for it onto the market.
Although Amitai has climbed mountains and run races such as ultra-marathons before, this is the first time she will be using her athleticism for a charitable cause. She will undertake the task with a team of 15 others, made up of researchers, cancer patients, and supporters.
