Westbury lights up for the holidays

Cold temperatures didn't keep the community from turning out for a tree lighting ceremony in Carle Place, next to Westbury, at the beginning of this month.

Sponsored by the Carle Place Civic Association, the ceremony featured an appearance by the high school brass band and choir. The musical groups kept the crowds entertained with a number of holiday classics.

Students from Carle Place High School decorated the windows of shops along Westbury Avenue as part of an annual decorating contest. The winners included Trinity and Skylar Reed and Emiline Biggin, who decorated the windows at Gino's pizzeria with a Flappy Bird and frog theme.

Other winners included Natalie Garcia and Katelynn Mazzeo, who created a design featuring Snoopy in other windows at Gino's. The Civic Association could use Stationery printing to create certificates recognizing the students for their hard work.

John Hommel, president of the Carle Place Civic Association, acted as the emcee for the evening's festivities. Speaking to the Westbury Times, he said:

"The Civic Association provides this event each year to bring the community together and provide a kick-off to the holiday season for all."

Hommel went on to note that the goal is to make the ceremony bigger and better in future years.

The actual lighting of the tree was handled by the president of the Carle Place Senior Center, John Heslin. Mr. and Mrs. Claus made a surprise appearance near the end of the event, traveling down the street escorted by the fire department.
