Each year, the seals return to the beaches on Long Island, and the staff at the Westbury area Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center will be hosting tours that welcome them back.
Two species of seal call the area their winter home, and can be seen swimming and sunning themselves on the sand. The participants in the excursion will walk on Jones Beach, hoping to spot harbor and gray seals, and they will also learn about their habits and role in their ecosystem.
There are dates throughout the winter to choose from, and as the activity will be split between time indoors and time on the beach, everyone is reminded to dress warmly. Advanced RSVPs are required, and while there is no registration fee, everyone will be asked to pay $4 when they arrive to help meet the cost of hosting the event.
Not everyone will be aware of the wildlife all around them, and hosting an outing gives the public a chance to discover their “neighbors in nature.” A brochure printing company can supply printed field guides and other learning materials so that the attendees will be able to keep on learning even after it has ended.
The Seal Walks offered by the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center run until March 27. They will all run from 2:30 pm until 4:00 pm, and more details are available on its Eventbrite listing.
