Westbury residents enjoyed a new twist on a classic tradition during the annual tree lighting ceremony.
The event kicked off with sweet treats from the Chamber of Commerce, including hot chocolate, donuts, and cake. The Mayor of Westbury, Peter Cavallaro welcomed the residents in attendance.
Mayor Cavallaro stated that he felt privileged to serve as the village's mayor and that Westbury was a special community, and one unlike any others.
Communities that put together holiday events often use poster printing to let residents know about the programs and what to expect during them. The Westbury tree lighting ceremony included performances from the choir from Westbury Middle School and from a brass band. The tree lighting was capped off with a visit from Santa Claus, who had a sack full of gifts to give.
The new twist on the tree lighting this year was the addition of a Holiday Market, situation in the gymnasium at the Phipps Sports Center, next door to the tree lighting at the Recreation Center.
The market featured a vendors selling handmade goods and other unique items. Proceeds from sales during the market went to various art programs in the area.
Many of the vendors at the holiday market might have been familiar to Westbury regulars, as some of them also set up shop during the artists' and farmers' market in the summer. Maureen Baranov, who organized the market, noted that there was a bit of a learning curve in terms of getting the word out about the market and letting the community know about the items for sale.
