Westbury basketball team honors coach's memory

In honor of the Westbury High School basketball team’s successful year, the PTA council and the family of assistant coach Edwin Redd recently held a dinner to celebrate the season.

The 2016-2017 school year has been a memorable one for the team. For the first time in the history of the school, the team took home the Long Island Championship title. Teams often hang Banners to celebrate victories and championship years.

This year’s dinner was a bittersweet occasion, as the team had lost assistant coach Redd in the fall of 2016. The banquet also served as a chance for the team to honor their coach and to celebrate the influence he had on the lives of team members.

Several team members, speaking to the Westbury Times, had plenty of tributes to pay to their coach. According to Brandon Ottley, a senior, the loss of their coach brought the team together and pushed them to work even harder on the court.

Isaia Bien-Aise, a junior, described Coach Redd as being like an older brother. On the loss of the coach, he stated that:

"As a team, we knew we had to work hard every day to overcome that adversity. To play this season without our coach meant a lot.”

Coach Redd's two sons, Shomari and Jabari Redd, have announced that they have started a scholarship fund in honor of their father. The scholarship will be given to student athletes and should start giving out awards next year.
