In recent years, the Village of Westbury has put a lot of effort into making its streets safer for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Last month, that hard work paid off, as the village was recognized by AAA for its efforts. Westbury received the Silver Award as part of AAA Northeast's Community Traffic Safety Awards Program.
Cities that receive awards and recognition can use Banners to highlight and advertise their achievements. Westbury was recognized by AAA for encouraging safe walking, driving, and biking. The organization also gave the village special recognition for having no pedestrian fatalities for the past eight years in a row.
Gloria Monitto, the chairwoman of the Public Safety Commission in Westbury, has made making the area safer her life's mission. She has been working on safety projects in the village for more than three decades.
Part of her work has been to put together several events in the community, such as bicycle rodeos. During the ‘rodeos’, people receive free helmets and get a primer in bike safety. Monitto has also put together programs to educate senior citizens on safe driving and to help parents make sure their car seats are safe.
Monitto works with other members of the commission, including board members Nicholas M. Grigoraki and Vickie Laura, to put together the programs. The Public Safety Commission tries to focus on all aspects of public safety, but traffic in the village tends to be the biggest issue.
