Westbury approves school enrollment study

The Westbury School District is growing, and the board of education recently approved a proposal from LBishop Associates to track and project the district's growth over the next decade.

The last time LBishop Associates conducted a demographic study for the district was during the 2013-2014 school year. The new study will be similar and will include enrollment projections, space requirements, demographic analysis and school facility inventory, among other aspects. The company presented the school district with a $5,000 proposal for the new study.

According to Dr. Mary Lagnado, the district's superintendent, the goal of this study will be to discover projections for the next few years. During the study, the firm will look at the school's current student body and enrollment figures and compare that information to birth rates and housing patterns in the area. Firms like these often use Presentation Folders when it is time to present final results to stakeholders.

Enrollment in the district increases by about 2 to 3 percent each year, with the greatest increase taking place at the high school level. In November 2015, 1,502 students were enrolled in the high school. By November 2016, that number had increased to 1,641.

Understanding enrollment projections will allow the school to hire more teachers as needed or even consider adding on to buildings or opening new schools.
