Thousands wear white to dinner in Old Westbury

Diner en Blanc (Dinner in White) is not a new concept, but last Friday, October 6, was the first time that people on Long Island had a chance to participate without traveling off of the island.

Around sunset, about 1,000 people arrived at the grounds of Old Westbury's de Seversky Mansion. They all wore white and brought with them tables and chairs, plus picnic baskets full of food and the appropriate number of plates, glasses, and table linens.

Just hours before the dinner, the guests had no idea where it would take place. Instead, they were directed to various pick-up spots across Suffolk and Nassau counties. Once there, they got on buses that transported them to the grounds of the mansion. Organizers of top-secret dinner parties can use Flyers to help spread the word and to give the event a word-of-mouth feel.

The first Diner en Blanc took place in Paris in the late 1980s. Since then, the concept has spread around world, taking place in more than 75 cities each year and hosting more than 100,000 diners. Its popularity is in spite of the fact that the cost of tickets doesn't include food (diners bring their own) or tables and place settings.

The Long Island Diner en Blanc was put together by PR and events specialist Bridget O'Brien. She chose the mansion for the location because of its beauty and status as a Nassau County destination.
