Nassau County approves anti-bullying website

Nassau County took steps towards combating bullying at the beginning of the month, when its legislature voted to approve a bill that would create an anti-bullying website.

The legislature voted unanimously to approve the bill during its July 9 meeting. Under the bill, which was signed into law by Laura Curran, the county executive, Nassau County, which includes Westbury, will create and operate a website that will provide resources to parents and children.

The law stipulates that the new website should be live and operational before the 2018-2019 school year begins. Counties that have passed new laws that will affect or improve the quality of life of their residents can use brochure printing to get the word out and to explain the scope of the law to constituents.

The new website will include definitions of bullying and explain its different Forms. It will also provide tips to help people spot Signs of bullying and provide resources for prevention.

Joshua Lafazan, a legislator from Woodbury, sponsored the bill. He told the Garden City Patch:

"This new website will ensure that critical, potentially life-saving resources are just a click away. I am ... proud to stand with County Executive Curran in this effort to make Nassau County schools safer places for all students to reach their maximum potential."

The website needs to go live on or before August 31 and must be updated regularly. It also needs to include the contact information and names of the Dignity for All Students Act school coordinator at each school district in the county.
