Local school spoofs legendary tale

Students at Carle Place High School, near Westbury, showed that the show really must go on when they put on a production of ‘Spamalot’ last weekend.

The comedic musical had two performances, on March 6 and 7, despite there being a snow day on March 5 causing a two-hour delay on the first day. Schools often use poster printing to get the word out about productions like this, and Carle Place turned to its Facebook page to raise interest.

Based on the movie ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’, Spamalot is a musical that takes audiences back to the time of King Arthur, but with a lot more humor than most versions of the story.

Joni Russo, who produced and directed the musical for the high school and who is the chairperson for the fine and performing arts department, noted that she chose the production not only because it was a popular and funny show, but also because it would be a great way to teach students the basics of comedy. She explained to the Westbury Times:

“This is very much out of their comfort zone, but with every show we do there’s reasons we pick it. It’s not just about doing a show, but we make it a whole educational experience.”
