College makes honor list for work in the community

SUNY College at Old Westbury has once again been recognized for its students' dedication to community service.

The school has been listed on the President's Community Service Honor Roll for the seventh year in a row. Officials from the school could use local Stationery printers to publicize the recognition and to create certificates for the students who helped it land on the list once again.

While college students aim to earn a high enough GPA to make it to the honor roll or dean's list, colleges themselves make it onto the roll for their community service efforts. This might include programs offered by the school and the number of students who participate in them.

Among the programs that helped the school earn recognition was First Year Student Engagement. As part of the initiatie, students perform a minimum of 50 hours of service, working with nonprofit groups in the region or with on-campus groups.

During the last year, the student body at SUNY/Old Westbury finished a collective 16,000 service hours. Calvin O. Butts, III, the president of SUNY/Old Westbury, noted that "integrating the classroom and the community" was part of the mission of the college. He went on to state that the award has encouraged the school to continue to focus on civic engagement and service learning.
