A pair of students from Levittown recently got the chance to show that they really were one in a million.
Helen Zhang and George Q. Yang were both recently named as $2,500 Merit Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The two students were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists. The list was whittled down from an initial 1.6 million applicants, and the pair are among 2,500 high school students to receive the award.
Scholarship contests can use Letterheads to let winning students know that they have been selected.
In the case of the National Merit Scholarship, students are chosen based on a range of criteria, including their skills, past accomplishments, and potential for academic success in college. Students are chosen from each state based on the number of graduating seniors in that state.
Potential merit scholars need to go through a pretty rigorous application process. Students need to write an essay, ask a school official to write a recommendation for them, demonstrate leadership in their community and school activities, earn high grades in challenging subjects, and submit the scores from standardized tests.
A committee made up of high school guidance counselors and college admissions officers review each application before choosing the winners.
Helen Zhang attends General Douglas MacArthur High School. George Q. Yang attends Portledge High School.
