Local pupils muy bien in Spanish tests

Students at Massapequa High School, near Levittown, understand the importance of speaking a foreign language, as nearly 30 of them earned high scores on the National Spanish Examination.

Their high scores meant they received medals of recognition, as well as the opportunity to apply for travel awards and scholarships. The number of Massapequa High students who earned the high scores nearly doubled this year compared to last.

Three seniors took home bronze medals for their scores on the Level 5 test. One junior, Giogia P., earned a gold medal on the Level 4 exam, while five juniors received silver medals and three were awarded bronze medals. A number of sophomores also earned gold, silver, or bronze medals on the Level 3 test. The high school could use Stationery printers to create certificates of recognition for each of the medal-earning students.

This year, more than 152,000 students across the U.S., in grades 6 through 12, took the National Spanish Examination. It is an online test given by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Part of the goal of the annual examination is to encourage proficiency in Spanish and develop nationwide standards.

William Anderson, the curriculum associate for World Languages at the high school, expressed his happiness at having so many students perform well. He commended the teachers for helping the students prepare for the exams.
