Earlier this month, a registered dietitian took a group of third grade students from the Schechter School of Long Island, near Levittown, on a tour of the Stop & Shop supermarket in Carle Place.
Arlene Stein, who works in the Division of Gastroenterology at Winthrop- University Hospital, walked up and down the grocery store aisles with the students, talking to them about the ways they can make smart and healthy food choices throughout the day.
The school visit was hosted by Arlene Putterman, the manager of public and community relations at the Stop & Shop. Initiatives like this often use Promotional Products to help the children remember to eat healthily once they get back home.
Discussing the importance of teaching kids about nutrition and healthy eating, Putterman noted that it a good diet can improve children’s energy and state of mind. She pointed out the challenges facing kids who might want to eat healthily, ranging from commercials for junk food and peer pressure from friends, while also noting that encouraging good eating habits at a young age can have a lasting impact on a child's relationship with food.
Stein had some advice for parents to help them improve their children's diets. She stressed the importance of family meals and of cooking at home, as well as the need to keep healthy snacks at hand.
